What is bouclé yarn?
The name comes from the French “bouclé” (curled, looped). During production the effect thread is fed faster than the core thread; the surplus forms loops around the core and is then fixed by a binder thread. By adjusting loop size and frequency, effects range from fine bouclé texture to a chunky “teddy” look.
Where is bouclé yarn used?
- Knitwear: voluminous, soft surfaces on sweaters, cardigans, jackets and vests.
- Hand knitting: plush look for blankets, shawls, beanies and toys.
- Weaving: bouclé fabrics for coats and jackets, and upholstery.
Tips for working with bouclé
Loops partly hide stitch patterns, so simple stitches work best. Adjust yarn tension and feed speed on the machine with samples.
